Hammertoe FAQs

Why do I have hammertoes?

stretching toes

It is difficult to say exactly why your toe joints are bent without an examination, but there are three main causes of hammertoes: genetics, arthritis, and injury. An inherited foot structure—especially one that has either a low or high arch—can lead to instability and the consequent development of this toe issue.

It is normal to think of injury as a traumatic event, like a car crash, but you can also injure your toes by wearing ill-fitting shoes. Footwear that are pointy, narrow, and/or too short can place excessive pressure on your toes and force the muscles out of balance. This might lead to hammertoes (and other frequently-seen foot issues). Joint diseases like arthritis can also lead to these deformities.
